Anxiety/ Worries

Happy couple

We all experience feelings of anxiety at some point in our lives, such as worrying about an exam or a job interview that we feel uneasy about. It is a normal response to a stressful situation. However, some people feel anxious or stressed most of the time and find it difficult to stop worrying about things. When this happens, anxiety can affect their daily lives.

Anxiety is the primary symptom of phobias, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If we experience a state of constant or prolonged anxiety or stress, it can also lead to other symptoms, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), insomnia, nail biting, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

When we perceive a situation as dangerous or stressful, our primitive fight-flight-freeze responses are activated which are natural survival mechanisms to alert us to the perceived threat.

This response was useful for early men when they faced life threatening situations on a daily basis in order to prepare their bodies to run away, freeze or fight.

This ‘programming’ of our brains has remained the same but unlike in the Stone Age, we rarely find ourselves in life threating situations. When we experience too much stress or we are out of our comfort zone, the flight-flight-freeze response is our body’s way to deal with the assumed ‘danger’.

Research also tells us that it is not the events in our lives that cause anxiety but rather it is the way we think about them.
